NVDA stock is up 5X 🚀

👉 Since I published my "Copernicus Moment" podcast in May 2023, NVDA stock has gone up by 5X. Predictably, a significant number of folks are just now coming to grips with the fact that the AI revolution is both real and transformative. This is very good news for those who get it and invest in the companies.

👉 In spite of the huge move in AI adjacent stocks, I believe that we are still in the early stages of this move. That said, it is going to be a bumpy ride. Entire companies will cease to exist (Kodak, Sears, etc.) while new ones will emerge as winners in the Age of AI (Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.).

👉 Many of tomorrow’s most successful companies do not even exist yet. The same is true for jobs. Every institution, both public and private, will be profoundly transformed. We will see major breakthroughs in education, medicine and science.

Jaw-dropping capabilities 😳

Today's frontier LLM models are vastly superior to the early ones built by OpenAI just three years ago. Early adopters are reaping huge rewards which can be measured by jaw-dropping capabilities -- writing, image generation, software coding and math computations -- just to name a few. Most importantly, the time-savings enjoyed by these early users is literally, life-changing -- or at least life-extending.

Calculus-changing inflection point 🧮

Speaking of life-saving, industry leaders are saying that we can expect AI driven discoveries in science and healthcare in the coming months. This includes ones where researchers are assisted by AI as well as those that are made by AI on its own. In other words, the AI models are close to coming up with breahthroughs that human scientists and researchers have not even thought of yet. Let that sink in for a minute. When this happens, the AI calculus changes. Profoundly.

What is AI worth? 🥼 💊

What is AI worth if it helps us (mankind) save lives by curing cancer and other diseases? What is AI worth if it can help us eradicate illiteracy? What is AI worth if it gives every child access to PhD-level intelligence that was previously available only to the wealthy?

If you haven't discovered (or understand) the true power of AI, you won't be able to answer those questions but I can tell you that the changes we are about to witness are nothing short of profound. This is not a once-in-a-lifetime event, it is a once-in-a-civilization event.

This Bloomberg article speaks to the staggering amount of capital that the publicly traded hyperscalers (Amazon, Google, META, Microsoft, etc.) will spend in 2026 to expand their computing capaibilties. Keep in mind that the $800 million does not include capex by private companies like Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI. It also does not include the capex from international companies or sovereign entities (e.g., Saudi Arabia, etc.).

Bottom line » » » This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for YOU to create wealth. We are in the very early stages of the AI boom. AI will impact every company that embraces and applies this technology to its systems, processes, people and products. Yes there will me massive job displacement but the creation of new jobs and business opportunities -- ones that have yet to make themselves known will be as massive, if not more so.

This has happened in every technological transformation that has come before. Be it the Scientific Revolution, ushered in by the great scientists of the 14th and 15th C. like Copercnicus and Humboldt. The invention of the printing press, the Industrial Revolution, medicine, autos, electricity, television, transisters, space exploration, semi-conductors, the Internet. No human could have conceived of these technological breakthroughs five years before they came into existence. That's because we don't know what we don't know.

We are standing on the cusp of a similar inflection point. Maybe the most transformative of them all, because the end result of this revolution is the democratization of knowledge, intelligence. Embrace this. Adopt AI. Do your homework. Inveest in the companies that get it. We are in the very early innings.

Later that year, I embarked on a project called, Urban Explorers TV. The idea was to interview “urban visionaries” about their businesses and their work — their visions. It was a fun and interesting project. Sadly, I got busy with my tours and really did not have the resources to do the project justice. I learned that video production is time-intensive. It can also be expensive, if one wants to do it right.

In any event, I ended up producing six “episodes” of UXATL-TV, all of which appear below. It is always interesting (enlightening, actually) to go back and watch videos like this 8+ years later, especially in a city where things are changing so fast and dramatically. I hope you enjoy watching them.

The Atlanta Campaign

Overview

The Atlanta Campaign was a major military operation during the American Civil War that took place from May to September 1864. The operation involved dozens of battles and other military activity that occurred between Chattanooga and Atlanta. This podcast series will focus on the major battles, which are listed chronologically below.

The campaign aimed to capture the city of Atlanta, which was a crucial transportation hub for the Confederacy. The Union forces, led by General William T. Sherman, engaged in a series of battles and maneuvers against the Confederate Army of Tennessee, led by General Joseph E. Johnston. Ultimately, the campaign was a significant Union victory, as they were able to capture Atlanta and deal a significant blow to the Confederacy's war effort.

The father of the “Mother of all Ah-ha’s”

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) was a Polish mathematician and astronomer who proposed that the sun was stationary in the center of the universe and the earth revolved around it. Up to that point, the consensus “world view” was that the Earth was stationary and at the center of the universe.

Copernicus’s theories were rejected by scholars of his time, and they incensed the Catholic Church. His writings were banned from the church after his death and were not allowed to be read for three centuries. Copernicus spent his final years defending his work and died on May 24, 1543, at the age of 70.

The publication of Copernicus's heliocentric model in his book De Revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres) was a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution and making a pioneering contribution to the Scientific Revolution.

NVIDIA's GPUs have become central to AI for several reasons. First, they can perform many calculations simultaneously, making them much faster than traditional central processing units (CPUs) at handling complex calculations. This allows researchers and developers to train larger and more complex neural networks, which are the foundation of many AI applications.

Second, NVIDIA has developed software libraries and tools specifically for AI and ML tasks, such as the CUDA parallel computing platform, cuDNN deep neural network library, and TensorRT inference optimizer. These tools allow researchers and developers to accelerate their AI workloads on NVIDIA GPUs and get the most out of the hardware.

Finally, NVIDIA has made significant investments in AI research and development, and has worked closely with researchers and industry partners to advance the field. AI Revolution

We may look on our time as the moment civilization was transformed, as it was by fire, agriculture, and electricity. In 2023, we learned that a machine taught itself how to speak to humans like a peer — which is to say with creativity, truth, error, and lies. The technology known as a chatbot is only one of the recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence; machines that can teach themselves superhuman skills. CEO Sundar Pichai told us AI will be as good or as evil as human nature allows. The revolution, he says, is coming faster than you know. — Scott Pelley, 60 Minutes (April 2023)

Scott Pelley: Do you think Society is prepared for what's coming?

Sundar Pichai: You know, there are two ways I think about it. On one hand, I would say no (society is not prepared) because there seems to be a mismatch between the pace at which we can think and adapt as societal institutions and the pace at which technology is evolving. On the other hand, I have seen more people worried about AI earlier in its life cycle than with previous technologies, so (in that sense) I feel optimistic. The number of people who have started worrying about the implications is significant, hence the conversations are starting to become serious as well.

Technology that we interact with at the human scale…

Walter Isaacson: You know, industrial, scientific and technological revolutions sometimes sneak up on us. I mean, nobody woke up one morning in 1760 and said, Oh my God the industrial revolution has started, but in the past three or four weeks — between my students and myself — we suddenly feel that we're in a revolution, where artificial intelligence has become personal; it's become chatbots and things that will integrate into our lives. Do you think we're on the cusp of some new revolution?

Eric Schmidt: I do, and this revolution is happening faster than I've ever seen. ChatGPT, which was released a few months ago, now has more than 100 million users. It took G-mail five years to get to the same point. There's something about the diffusion of technology that we interact with at the human scale that's going to change our world in a profound way, much more profound than people think.

Most important advance in technology since the graphical user interface...

Bill Gates: In my lifetime, I’ve seen two demonstrations of technology that struck me as revolutionary.

The first time was in 1980, when I was introduced to a graphical user interface — the forerunner of every modern operating system, including Windows. I sat with the person who had shown me the demo, a brilliant programmer named Charles Simonyi, and we immediately started brainstorming about all the things we could do with such a user-friendly approach to computing. Charles eventually joined Microsoft, Windows became the backbone of Microsoft, and the thinking we did after that demo helped set the company’s agenda for the next 15 years.

The second big surprise came just last year. I’d been meeting with the team from OpenAI since 2016 and was impressed by their steady progress. In mid-2022, I was so excited about their work that I gave them a challenge: train an artificial intelligence to pass an Advanced Placement biology exam. Make it capable of answering questions that it hasn’t been specifically trained for. (I picked AP Bio because the test is more than a simple regurgitation of scientific facts — it asks you to think critically about biology.) If you can do that, I said, then you’ll have made a true breakthrough.

I thought the challenge would keep them busy for two or three years. They finished it in just a few months.

In September, when I met with them again, I watched in awe as they asked GPT, their AI model, 60 multiple-choice questions from the AP Bio exam — and it got 59 of them right. Then it wrote outstanding answers to six open-ended questions from the exam. We had an outside expert score the test, and GPT got a 5 — the highest possible score, and the equivalent to getting an A or A+ in a college-level biology course.

Once it had aced the test, we asked it a non-scientific question: “What do you say to a father with a sick child?” It wrote a thoughtful answer that was probably better than most of us in the room would have given. The whole experience was stunning.

I knew I had just seen the most important advance in technology since the graphical user interface.

Artificial Intelligence: Creating the Assembly Line for Knowledge Workers

AI training cost declines continued at an annual rate of 70%, the cost to train a large language model to GPT-3 level performance collapsing from $4.6 million in 2020 to $450,000 in 2022. We expect cost declines to continue at a 70% rate through 2030.

My thoughts…

"Us all" means each and every one of us. Especially those of us who are unaware of or in denial of disruptive technologies and trends that are rendering current technologies and ways of doing things obsolete. It also includes those of us who are married to old paradigms (i.e., the way things used to be).

If the pandemic (and its subsequent, lingering effects on the economy and financial markets) have taught us anything, it is that even the smartest among us are constantly being blindsided. When our corporate and political leaders say things like, "we were caught off guard" or "we didn't see that coming" you know that there is more (way more) out there that we don't know. As in, we don't know what we don't know.

This is all part of what I call, the "Age of Dissonance." Too much information, too much misinformation. The current rate and magnitude of change are greater than most humans can process. I think this is what Mr. Klein is referring to.
